Equine Dental Technician

About

An Equine Dental Technician performs routine, non-invasive dental procedures such as scaling, interdental feed removal and manual rasping of teeth with files. They can correct basic dental issues such as removing sharp tooth edges and hooks. Dental technicians are not permitted to use high-speed power floats or sedatives. Similarly, because equine dental technicians are not permitted to administer analgesics (pain killers), they are not permitted to perform extractions.

    Andrew Smith - Equine Dentist

    About Me:
    My first interest in horses came whilst I was at school where I began studying a Certificate III in horse studies at Box Hill TAFE. Upon completing my schooling I went to Caulfield to began working in the stables with trainers Jim, John and Gerard Moloney. They helped me in a practical sense and gave me a great introduction into the industry. Since then, I have spent a season in New Zealand breaking in horses for Te Akau Farm, learning more about younger horses and the education process. It was at this point that I decided that I would like to look into a career in equine dentistry.

    After looking into a couple of different options to study equine dentistry I came to the conclusion that the EDAA (Equine Dentistry Association of Australia) provided the most comprehensive education process. Under the tutelage of the best dentists across Australia I have been able to work all over the world, starting in Japan where I worked at some of the most successful stables and studs. I returned to Australia start my own business called Andrew Smith Equine Dentistry where I now work for some of the most successful stables and in Victoria such as the Darren Weir and the Mick Price stables.

    About the Job:
    I’ve been self-employed working as an equine dentist for the past seven years. Equine dentistry is a job that requires you to be both hands-on with the horses and able to describe what’s going inside the mouth to the owner and trainer. The job involves manual floating of the molars and removing premolars. A high level of horsemanship is required to keep the horse safe and calm. I think that the industry experience that I gained whilst working in the stables has been invaluable. Industry experience has played a very important role for me and I would recommend to anyone wanting to follow a similar career path.
