Racing Victoria (RV) Stewards have issued two charges against Austy Coffey, as the licensed trainer of Burrum’s Buzz, under Australian Rules of Racing 178 and 178F(1). The details are as follows:
Charge One: AR178 - Presentation of horse to race with a prohibited substance
AR178 - “When any horse that has been brought to a racecourse for the purpose of engaging in a race and a prohibited substance is detected in any sample taken from it prior to or following its running in any race, the trainer and any other person who was in charge of such horse at any relevant time may be penalised.”
The particulars of the charge are summarised as follows:
- On 23 September 2016, Burrum’s Buzz was brought to the Swan Hill Racecourse and ran in the Hygain Maiden Plate over 1200 metres; and
- A prohibited substance, being Caffeine and its metabolite Theophylline, (which are central nervous system stimulants), was detected in a post-race urine sample taken from Burrum’s Buzz on 23 September 2016.
Charge Two: AR178F(1) - Failure to maintain a horse’s treatment record
AR178F(1) - “A trainer must record treatment and medication administered to each horse in his or her care by midnight on the day on which the administration was given, and each record must include the following information:…”
The particulars of the charge are summarised as follows:
- It was established during a stable inspection on 28 October 2016, that Mr Coffey failed to record treatment of ‘ITZ MAGIC’ (which contains caffeine), a medication administered orally to Burrum’s Buzz in accordance with AR178F(1).
The charges issued against Mr Coffey will be heard before the Racing Appeals and Disciplinary (RAD) Board on a date to be fixed.
