Winx headlines Turnbull Stakes field of ten

The mighty mare Winx will face nine rivals in the Group 1 $500,000 TAB Turnbull Stakes (2000m) at Flemington on Saturday, 6 October 2018 after the field was finalised today.

Winx will take on the Mick Price-trained pair Grunt and Mighty Boss, New Zealand stayer Jon Snow and the Hayes, Hayes and Dabernig Irish gelding Ventura Storm, all of whom are Group 1 winners.

Stella Artois Caulfield Cup (2400m) favourite King’s Will Dream accepted the challenge of denying  Winx’s tilt at a 28th consecutive victory, while Winx’s trainer Chris Waller has also entered her stablemate and Group 1 winner Youngstar.

The Matthew Dunn-trained Divine Unicorn, Godolphin’s Tally and the Jarrod McLean-trained Trap for Fools round out the 10-horse field for the race, which is scheduled for 3pm on Saturday under set weights plus penalties conditions.

Winx will aim to defend her title after
winning the Turnbull Stakes by 6.5 lengths last year, as she continues her journey to claim an unprecedented fourth Ladbrokes Cox Plate (2040m) on Saturday, 27 October at The Valley.

Racing Victoria’s Executive General Manager Racing and Participant Wellbeing, Greg Carpenter, said: “We are pleased to welcome the mighty mare Winx back to Victoria ahead of what will be a terrific day at Flemington this Saturday for the Group 1 $500,000 TAB Turnbull Stakes.
“Winx will come up against a quality field, with five other Group 1 winners accepting the challenge to take on the wonder mare.

“I hope the fans come out in force on Saturday to see this magnificent horse chase history once again.”

Winx took her career earnings to almost $20 million with her last win at Randwic
k, and will aim for her 21st Group 1 win on Saturday.
