Brilliant Brown crowned the Rising Star again

Ethan Brown has been crowned the winner of the RMBL Investments Rising Stars Series for the second successive season, with Teo Nugent and Michael Poy claiming second and third place respectively after today’s final leg at Flemington.

Brown was ineligible to ride in the final four legs of this year’s apprentice-only series, having outridden his metropolitan claim in May, but he had already built an unassailable lead over his rivals thanks to a red-hot spell during the autumn.

The Alice Springs native collected his trophy from Colin Madden, part-owner of legendary mare Black Caviar and Chairman of title sponsors RMBL Investments, as well as a retail voucher for $6,000.

Brown banked back-to-back wins in the 25-race series, having overhauled long-time leader Steph Thornton in the Rising Stars Final at Flemington 12 months ago.

The 20-year-old carried that momentum into this season, laying down early markers with victories at Bendigo and Geelong in November 2018 and January 2019 respectively. Three straight wins during the autumn period – at Seymour, Bendigo and Echuca – saw Brown surge well clear of his rivals, setting an unreachable target of 74 points.

RMBL Investments Chairman, Colin Madden, said: “RMBL Investments is delighted to support racing and youth and we couldn’t think of a better way to do it than through the Rising Stars Series. We’re looking forward to continuing our partnership with this great initiative next year.”

Mel Weatherley, RV’s Athlete and Careers Development Manager, said: “Our congratulations go to Ethan Brown for claiming back-to-back wins in the Rising Stars Series, his victory last year was only sealed in the final race but this time he built a big lead thanks to some superb performances during the autumn period.

“Congratulations also to all the apprentices for taking part in this year’s series, even though Ethan proved too hard to catch the quality of riding throughout remained at a very high level and the battle for the minor placings went right down to the wire.

“Finally, our thanks go to Colin Madden and RMBL Investments for their sponsorship of this year’s Rising Stars Series, Colin is a well-known figure in the racing industry and to have his support is a very welcome endorsement of the apprentice program in Victoria.”
