Wolfe escapes Lexus Melbourne Cup penalty

Racing Victoria (RV) Executive General Manager - Racing, Greg Carpenter, today announced that he has elected not to issue a weight penalty in the Lexus Melbourne Cup (3200m) to the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained Wolfe.

The five-year-old gelding was victorious in yesterday’s Ladbrokes Coongy Cup (2000m), winning an exemption into the Stella Artois Caulfield Cup on Saturday. Under the conditions of that race Wolfe could not be penalised for the Caulfield Cup and will run with 50kg.

Carpenter said: “Wolfe could have been penalised for the Melbourne Cup however given he won the race on the limit weight in a competitive finish to the 2000m feature, where he held off Top of the Range who was also on the limit weight, we have elected not to issue a penalty for the Melbourne Cup where he has 50kg and is 57th in the order of entry.”

Carpenter also noted that the winner of Saturday’s St Leger Stakes (2600m) at Royal Randwick cannot be penalised under the conditions of the Melbourne Cup as it is not an internationally recognised Group or Listed race.
