RV & MRC Statement: Sandown Racecourse planning scheme amendment to go to council

The City of Greater Dandenong will shortly consider the Melbourne Racing Club’s Planning Scheme Amendment application for Sandown Racecourse (Ladbrokes Park).

First announced in May 2019, the Planning Scheme Amendment process will now enter the statutory process stage.  The outcome of the application will not be known for over 12 months.

Racing Victoria and the Melbourne Racing Club are working collaboratively on the approach for Sandown. Racing Victoria supports the Melbourne Racing Club’s application as an important step to understanding the potential options for Sandown and its role as part of the broader racing industry infrastructure footprint.

No decision on Sandown’s future will be made until after an extensive consultation process has been undertaken.  Racing Victoria and the Melbourne Racing Club will consult with industry participants, MRC members, the local community and other relevant stakeholders.

Any future decision that may be undertaken by MRC and RV in relation to Sandown will be done in the best interests of the broader racing industry, MRC members and the local community.

Whilst the Sandown Planning Scheme Amendment application canvasses’ full redevelopment of the entire site as part of the re-zoning, ceasing horseracing requires agreement from RV and MRC Members and needs to be in the best interests of Victorian Thoroughbred Racing.

Regardless of the application for the full rezoning of the land, other options may be considered in the future should it be determined to be in the best interests of the MRC Members and the Victorian racing industry.

The existing uses of the Sandown Racecourse will remain as is for the foreseeable future.  Horseracing will continue and the Supercars remain on periodical contracts for their meetings.

RV supports and will continue to work with the MRC on its Masterplan vision including the Planning Scheme Amendment application for Sandown and development at Caulfield for a second track and lights.

A formal consultation process on the broader racing industry infrastructure footprint will be launched by Racing Victoria very shortly.  This process will outline the consultation for Sandown and other infrastructure matters for Victorian Thoroughbred Racing.
