RV Stewards' Report - Greg Eurell

Racing Victoria Staff

Racing Victoria (RV) Stewards have received reports from Racing Analytical Services Limited (RASL) confirming that a prohibited substance was detected in samples collected from the Greg Eurell trained racehorse, Trial By Press.

The reports relate to blood samples collected from Trial By Press prior to and following its running in the ‘Selangor Turf Club Handicap’ (Race 4) over 1400 metres at Caulfield Racecourse on 31 May 2025, where Trial By Press finished first.

RASL reported that these blood samples were shown to contain Dexamethasone, which is a prohibited substance on race day in accordance with the Australian Rules of Racing.

The Australian Racing Forensics Laboratory also reported that it had detected Dexamethasone within the reserve portion of the blood samples.

Dexamethasone is a synthetic corticosteroid hormone used to manage inflammation or conditions in which the immune system has a significant role.

Dexamethasone is registered for use in horses by the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority, and is commonly used to treat allergic reactions, such as respiratory allergies, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (heaves), hives, itching and inflammatory diseases.

Dexamethasone is, however, a prohibited substance under the Australian Rules of Racing when detected in a sample taken from a horse at a race meeting or trial (including an official trial or a jump-out for the purpose of obtaining a permit to start in a race).

RV Stewards initially informed Mr Eurell of the irregularities on 4 July 2025. Mr Eurell has now been informed of the confirmatory findings and that the Stewards are continuing with their investigation.
