Racing Victoria (RV) and Kilmore Racing Club (KRC) are saddened to acknowledge the sudden passing of highly esteemed and long-serving industry member Robert “Chappy” Chapman.

Chappy had a lifelong association with the horse racing industry which spanned 51 years, starting at the young age of 17 at Flemington Racecourse while working under legendary trainer Bart Cummings and as foreman for Leon Corstens.

He would go on to work with several thoroughbred and harness racing trainers including Don and Trevor Dove, Bobby Knight, Tommy Archer and Hannah Powell.

Chappy was a well-respected member of the Kilmore Football Club, and the Broadford Football Club where he was team manager for 10 years.

He would spend his later years working as Trackwork Supervisor at the Kilmore Racing Club, a role which he loved, and playing lawn bowls at the Broadford Bowls Club where he was crowned club champion on multiple occasions.

Robert Chapman will be sadly missed by all who knew him.

“RV extends its condolences on behalf of the entire Victorian racing industry to Robert Chapman’s family, friends and colleagues on the news of his sudden passing,” said RV Chair, Tim Eddy.

“I’d like to recognise Chappy’s incredible contribution to the racing industry over a period of more than five decades, he will be missed by many.”

“The Kilmore community is devastated by the loss of the beloved Robert “Chappy” Chapman,” said Kilmore Racing Club Chief Executive, Ben Murphy.

“Chappy made so many connections across various racecourses and sporting clubs throughout his life, and our condolences go out to his family, friends and anyone who was lucky enough to know him.”
