Owners encouraged to 'Walk for Phil'

Owners are encouraged to honour the legacy of a fellow racing enthusiast and take part in the ‘Walk for Phil’, which commemorates the life of prominent owner Phil Sly on Friday, 20 April.

Phil, who raced talented horses including Group 1 winners Mosheen and Politeness, was a much-loved figure in the racing industry who lost his fight with cancer in 2016.

Despite battling the disease for many years he never lost his passion for racing, and the industry is set to come together to celebrate Phil’s life through the second annual walk, which will again raise vital funds for two charities which were close to Phil’s heart – Pinchapoo and Very Special Kids.

For the first time this year, participants can gather a team to walk the course together, starting at Moonee Valley and ending at Caulfield, with a pit stop at Flemington en route.

The MRC Foundation, one of several key industry stakeholders which are supporting the walk, will throw an afterparty at Caulfield from 3pm.

A number of owners, trainers and jockeys are expected to take part in the walk including John Sadler, who trained several horses for Phil.

Further details about the walk, which takes place on the eve of the Owners and Breeders Raceday at Caulfield, can be found at www.walkforphil.com
