Feature Races Overview

The Spring Racing Carnival (SRC) is Australia’s most prestigious and historic celebration of thoroughbred racing, featuring three months of elite equine action.

During last year’s SRC, more than AUD $84 million in prizemoney and bonuses were on offer across 132 race meetings, starting with Memsie Stakes Day at Caulfield on Saturday, 1 September and concluding with Sportsbet Ballarat Cup Day on Saturday, 24 November. The three jewels in the Carnival’s crown each carried record prizemoney, with the Lexus Melbourne Cup (3200m) at Flemington up $1 million to $7.3 million; the Stella Artois Caulfield Cup (2400m) at Caulfield up $2 million to $5 million; and the Ladbrokes Cox Plate (2040m) at The Valley up $2 million to $5 million.

Fittingly, in a year in which the SRC celebrated a quarter of a century of international competition, overseas raiders took out two of the three majors with Saeed bin Suroor’s Best Solution winning the Caulfield Cup, and Cross Counter – trained by Charlie Appleby – leading home a British trifecta in the Melbourne Cup. Last year’s crop also took the number of international visitors to the SRC past the 250 mark.
