Bob Charley has brought a deep understanding of every facet of the sport to his distinguished career in racing administration. His various roles included owner-trainer, breeder, punter, commentator, magazine publisher, historian, and advocate of Australian poet A.B. “Banjo” Paterson. In 2001, he was honoured with the Order of Australia for services to Australian racing and to social welfare, health and sporting groups. He served as the Chairman of the Australian Jockey Club from 1992–96, became the inaugural Chairman of both the New South Wales Thoroughbred Board and the Australian Racing Board (from 1998–2004), and was Chairman of the Australian Racing Hall of Fame Selection Panel between 2011–18.
