About

Poseidon can lay claim to be Australia's best-ever three-year-old, and Australia's greatest stayer - 16 of his 19 wins came over distances of ten furlongs (2,000 metres) or more.

Poseidon revealed little of his talent as a two-year-old, winning just one of his six starts. As a three-year-old in 1906-07 he began the season with two wins in moderate company, and then unleashed a winning streak such as had never been seen before: 11 wins from 14 starts including the two Derbies double and the two Cups double. The following season he added a second Caulfield Cup to his tally and five other wins at the highest level.

The name Jimmy Ah Poon, a Chinese market gardener, will always be associated with Poseidon. In his three-year-old season Jimmy Ah Poon backed Poseidon in every one of his 11 wins, but not in his three defeats. He left the racetrack a wealthy man, never to be seen there again.

A leg injury in September 1908, brought an end to Poseidon's career, and he was retired to stud.

Poseidon was inducted into the Australian Racing Hall of Fame in 2004.
