Cranbourne and Ballarat – a strong start to 2026
Last month at Cranbourne, Racing Victoria (RV) welcomed nine participants to the Stable Start program, including three owners who were eager to expand their knowledge and understanding of the day-to-day workings of a racing stable.
The owners were a welcome addition to the program, asking thoughtful questions, undertaking practical tasks and building a stronger appreciation of the daily work carried out by trainers and their stable staff.
One owner shared that participating gave them a far greater insight to:
The daily routine and time pressures within a stable;
The importance of clear communication and teamwork; and
And the welfare and safety practices that underpin all stable operations.
In the more recent Stable Start sessions at Ballarat, another group of nine participants - which again included owners - completed the program, bringing enthusiasm, curiosity and a willingness to learn about the industry.
Programs like Stable Start are not only designed to educate participants, but also to strengthen connections across the thoroughbred racing industry.
What is Stable Start?
Stable Start is an entry-level education program which is delivered by RV in partnership with the Racing Education Centre. Across four days of intensive learning, participants get the opportunity to gain hands-on experience and practical exposure to:
Safe horse handling in stables and at trackwork;
Understanding racing stable operations;
Workplace health and safety requirements;
Industry expectations and professional standards; and
And pathways into further training and employment.
The program is practical, interactive and delivered within a working racing environment, giving participants a genuine understanding of what happens behind the scenes each morning.
