So You Are handed Melbourne Cup penalty

Racing Victoria Staff

Bjorn Baker’s So You Are has slightly improved his Lexus Melbourne Cup (3200m) position, having received a 0.5kg penalty after winning Saturday’s Group 3 Colin Stephen Quality (2400m) at Rosehill.

Racing Victoria (RV) Head of Handicapping, David Hegan, today announced the five-year-old son of So You Think would rise from 52kg to 52.5kg for the race that stops a nation, thus climbing three spots in the order of entry to 49th.

So You Are has not been penalised in the Sportsbet Caulfield Cup (2400m) and remains on the minimum weight of 51kg, however has improved his rating relative to the weight for age benchmark scale and rises three places to 34th in the order of entry.

“So You Are carried 58.5kg to his Group 3 win on Saturday which was considered when allocating his 0.5kg penalty in the Lexus Melbourne Cup,” said David Hegan.

“He is not penalised in the Caulfield Cup where he carries 51kg, however does progress 0.5kg vs the weight for age benchmark from a true weight of 50.5kg to 51kg. Therefore, he is now 8kg below the weight for age benchmark which takes him from 37th to 34th in the order of entry.”

Sunday’s Group 3 JRA Cup (2000m) winner Royal Supremacy was not penalised in the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups where he is allocated 54.5kg and 56kg respectively. The Group 1 winner was previously weighted on exposed form and this weekend’s performance does not warrant reassessment.

First acceptances for the Lexus Melbourne Cup close tomorrow, Tuesday, 29 September at 12 noon while second acceptances for the Sportsbet Caulfield Cup close Tuesday, 6 October at 12 noon.
