Apprentice Jockey Program  

The Apprentice Jockey Training Program is a high-performance athlete program operated by Racing Victoria.

Its aim is to provide a continuous improvement environment that develops professional athletes for sustainable and successful riding careers.

Qualification

Prior to acceptance into the Apprentice Jockey Training Program and commencement of the Certificate IV in Racing (Jockey), a Certificate III in Racing (Trackwork Rider) is required.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Thoroughbred racing is a weight-making sport — applicants must demonstrate a suitable and sustainable healthy race riding weight.
  • Applicants must be employed and have been working for a Victorian licenced trainer for a period of 12 months prior to applying.
  • Applicants must have been a member of the Rider Development Squad (RDS) for the previous 12 months.

Applications Close: 

  • 30 June 2026 for the 2027 intake.

Next Steps Once You Apply:

  • Applications will be reviewed to confirm eligibility.
  • Shortlisted applicants will be invited to participate in a suitability and testing process (e.g., fitness, riding assessment, medical assessment).
  • Final selections into the AJTP will be made following these assessments.
