Rider Development Squad 

The Rider Development Squad (RDS) is a Racing Victoria initiative designed to support the ongoing development of trackwork riders across all levels of experience. 

The RDS aims to enhance the skills, knowledge, and professionalism of riders through targeted education and training opportunities.

Whether you're an experienced rider, a recent graduate of a trackwork riding course, or preparing to commence your trackwork journey, the RDS offers valuable insights and support to help you reach your full potential.

Program Overview

The RDS focuses on improving rider performance and technique through a series of practical and theory-based training sessions. Topics covered include:

• Strength and conditioning
• Nutrition and wellbeing
• Riding skills and technique
• Professional development
• Career planning and goal setting

In addition to developing key competencies, the program also fosters personal growth and encourages a high-performance mindset.

Pathway to the Apprentice Jockey Training Program (AJTP)

The RDS is the official pathway for trackwork riders who wish to apply for the Apprentice Jockey Training Program (AJTP).

To be eligible to apply for the 2026 AJTP intake, applicants must have participated in the RDS throughout 2025. While RDS membership is a requirement for AJTP consideration, the program is first and foremost about developing skilled and confident track riders, whether or not they wish to pursue a jockey apprenticeship.

As a member of the RDS, you will also have access to training and support specifically designed to help you prepare for the AJTP. This includes:

• Ongoing support and coaching from Racing Victoria coaches
• Structured performance feedback, including jump-out reviews
• Guidance to develop the technical and professional standards expected of future apprentice jockeys

2025 Program Dates

The 2025 Rider Development Squad consists of five in-person training sessions held at Racing Victoria’s head office. Please note, dates are subject to change:

• Friday, 7 February 2025
• Wednesday, 30 April 2025
• Thursday, 12 June & Friday, 13 June 2025 (attend one day only)
• Thursday, 21 August & Friday, 22 August 2025 (attend one day only)
• Thursday, 9 October & Friday, 10 October 2025 (attend one day only)

Please note: For RDS training sessions that run across two days, each rider will be allocated one day only to attend. This ensures the training is delivered in a small group environment to maximise rider engagement and feedback.
