  • Penny Reeve - CEO, Seymour Racing Club

    About Me:

I grew up in a family who knew very little about horses or racing but I managed to acquire a pony in my early teens and within a few years I was a keen racing enthusiast.

I raced a couple of horses and then decided to take out an owner trainer’s licence myself while I worked in an administrative role away from the racing industry. A position came up at the Seymour Racing Club as Assistant Secretary some 17 years ago and I jumped at the chance to become involved in that side of the racing industry. Eight years ago I was appointed Chief Executive of the Club. I’m still training a couple of horses in the morning before I head back into the office for the day’s work. It means I have a very busy life but as I thoroughly enjoy both training and my job, it makes it all worthwhile.

    About the Job:

As Chief Executive of the Seymour Racing Club, my role is a varied one. I deal with marketing, sponsorship, setting budgets, functions, OH&S, working with the Committee and of course the day to day running of the Club. We have some 100 horses per day using the Seymour training facility and I liaise with trainers on various issues relating to this.

We only have a small staff at Seymour and it’s important that we work as a team. I rely on the senior members of that team to ensure that everything works well.

It’s a very interesting job in an ever-changing industry.

    Qualifications:

A range of qualifications would be useful for this position. Certainly VCE but any of the tertiary marketing, finance or business studies courses would be good, however, experience as an assistant in a racing club would no doubt give you the best grounding for taking on the role.
