One could best describe Etienne De Mestre as the Bart Cummings of his day.

De Mestre trained Archer to win the first two runnings of the Melbourne Cup and later trained a further three winners of Australia's greatest (Tim Whiffler, Chester and Calamia) race to create a record which lasted for 99 years until broken by Bart himself in 1977.

De Mestre also trained many other feature race winners including two AJC and two VRC Derbies and an Epsom Handicap.

De Mestre was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2002.
