Born in New Zealand, Maurice McCarten was an outstanding jockey both at home and when he moved to Sydney however he was to leave an indelible mark on Australian racing as a trainer.

He won the Sydney Premiership four times and trained some of the nation's most famous horses including the mighty Todman, winner of the inaugural Golden Slipper and outstanding mare Wenona Girl.

His big race wins included a Melbourne Cup (Delta), Caulfield Cup, two Cox Plates and three Epsom Handicaps.

McCarten was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2002.
